Student Investment Group

Ever wonder what it would be like to play in the Stock Market? Business students who join the Student Investment Group get to do just that, but they take it very seriously.

Using funds generously donated by alumni and friends, SIG students manage the ߲ݴý University Endowment. SIG students learn by doing in this real-world environment by evaluate stock options for optimal investing and making tough decisions based on the economy, stock value and security analysis.

As an shareholder, SIG students get to attend the annual Berkshire Hathaway meeting in Omaha and enjoy all the benefits that come with it.

The goals of the Student Investment Group is to:

  • To educate students in managing a financial portfolio.
  • To generate income for the ߲ݴý University Endowment in excess of the expenses to operate the Student Investment Fund.
  • To outperform the S&P 500 Index over a 3-to-5 year time horizon.
  • To discuss, evaluate, and apply theories of investments, economics, portfolio management, and security analysis among students.
  • To give students experience in gathering financial and economic data, and in making concise reports of their analysis and findings.

Investment Philosophy

Based on focused investing, sound theory, and entrepreneur spirit, the ߲ݴý University (“߲ݴý”) Student Investment Group (“SIG”) is a diverse group of young adult managers. The SIG believes it will outperform traditional benchmarks by looking for opportunities in both value and growth securities. Furthermore, with efficient and effective security management and proper asset allocation in various asset classes, the SIG will realize short and long run opportunities thereby achieving above average returns.

History

The Student Investment Group (SIG) has been active since the 1970s. SIG took its current shape in 2005. Generous donations from alumni and friends have created a several hundred thousand dollar portion of the University endowment that undergraduate finance students manage. SIG students must analyze the economy, industries and securities and then make decisions on how the portfolio will be allocated.

Mission Statement

The investment group seeks to gain investment knowledge through managing a portfolio of securities that will maximize the long-term growth of the portfolio for ߲ݴý University’s endowment.
