A former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Sri Lanka, and for Counter-Terrorism will deliver ߲ݴý University’s annual Curtis Lecture on Public Leadership on Thursday, February 27.
A. Peter Burleigh was an U.S. ambassador three times and a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State three times. He retired from the Foreign Service in 2000 and since then has consulted with The Carter Center, the National Intelligence Council, and was Visiting Distinguished Professor and Resident Ambassador at the University of Miami from 2004-2008.
In April 2009 he was asked by the Department of State to take charge of the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi pending the arrival of a newly confirmed ambassador, and served in that role until July 2009. In 2011-2012 he was brought back to the Foreign Service to take charge of the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi. Burleigh served in Sri Lanka, India, Nepal and Bahrain during his 33-year career.
His lecture, “Challenges to U.S. Foreign Policy,” begins at 7 p.m. in Olin B Lecture Hall, located one block east of 50th Street and St. Paul Ave. The lecture is free and open to the public. It will also be webcast live on the ߲ݴý website, www.nebrwesleyan.edu.
Mildred Curtis established the Senator Carl T. Curtis and Mildred M. Curtis Lecture on Public Leadership in 2005 to honor her late husband and senator, and to explore aspects of public and civic leadership.
The Curtis Lecture features public service leaders such as federal and state officeholders, diplomats and leaders in areas of political science, history, human relations and communication.
